Herbal teas can be taken to help treat a wide variety of ailments, but, since they are not derived from the Camellia sinensis plant, technically, they aren't really "teas" at all.

Herbal tea is created from infusions of roots, flowers, and spices, as well as other plant materials, and the correct name, in actuality, is a tisane. The are often referred to as teas, because they are brewed the same way as teas are brewed.

Just about any type of herb can be used to make tea, but they don't all have a pleasant taste. The stronger medicinal herbs generally have a very bitter taste, so to make them taste better, they are usually combined with real Green or Black tea, or with other herbs.

Goldenseal tea, for example, makes an excellent antibiotic tea, that can be taken to help treat throat conditions, because it bathes your throat when you drink it. It tastes really bad, though, so to cover up the taste, you can try mixing it with regular Green or Black tea.

Green tea may not be as effective as Black tea, however, because it has a much milder flavor. Other popular mixing options include orange or lemon flavored herbal teas, since they can help considerably to subdue the taste.

Kelp also makes an effective herbal tea, that is particularly useful for treating strep throat. It tastes pretty bad on it's own, though, so you should try mixing it with Black tea or other herbal teas that have a more pleasant taste.

There are also several herbal teas that have a very pleasant taste and aroma, and they can help to treat a wide variety of health problems. For example, Spearmint or Peppermint teas can be taken to help relieve bloating, stomach pains, and gas.

Licorice Root has a flavor that many people enjoy too, and it is an excellent remedy in tea form for treating laryngitis or a hoarse throat. You need to be aware, though, that Licorice is known to raise blood sugar levels, so be careful about how much you drink.

Lemon Balm is another member of the mint family that can be used to make a delicious herbal tea. It has slight antibacterial properties, but is used more commonly to help reduce stress, by creating a feeling of calm and serenity. It is also an effective herbal tea for treating colds and the flu.

Comfrey is an herbaceous perennial plant that is cultivated and also grows wild in various locations throughout the world.

While there are many varieties of Comfrey, Russian Comfrey is the variety most often used for medicinal purposes. Russian Comfrey is also referred to as Bruisewort, Blackwort, Knitbone and Healing Herb.

The use of Comfrey is restricted in many countries, including Canada, the United States and the U.K. The restrictions apply mainly to the internal use of this herb, and are in place because it contains PAs or hepatotoxic pyrrolizidine alkaloids. PAs have been known to cause liver disease, which can lead to liver failure.

Comfrey also contains allantoin, a natural compound that speeds up the replacement of body cells. Because of this, it is capable of producing rapid healing for sprained or broken bones, bruises, cuts and open wounds.

Herbalists have different views on the safe use of Comfrey taken internally. Some feel that taking Comfrey internally is quite safe, while others believe that certain variations of this herb are safe, while others should be avoided. Others use Comfrey strictly for external applications.

Comfrey is widely regarded for it's external applications, and people who have never tried it are often amazed by it's healing capabilities. It can be mixed with aloe vera, oil, petroleum jelly or beeswax to create a salve that does wonders for various common ailments.

Staph infections, for instance, are killed quickly by a simple application of comfrey or comfrey salve directly on the infected area. Open wounds heal quickly, and usually leave no scar behind. External applications of a Comfrey poultice or salve are known to speed up healing of torn tendons and ligaments, and even broken bones

It not only speeds up the healing process, it also provides instant pain relief when applied directly to an injury. It also works well to reduce swelling and inflammation.

Diabetes is now considered to be an epidemic in the United States.

Diabetes is now considered to be an epidemic in the United States. Millions of people suffer from this disease and the various health problems it causes, and many more are being diagnosed with some type of diabetes on a daily basis.

Despite common beliefs, though, diabetes can be treated successfully using herbal, natural, and alternative remedies. Some results are realized quickly, while others will take time. Keep in mind though, that it took time for your body to become diabetic to begin with.

Understanding natural and herbal treatments for diabetes requires you first have an understanding about how insulin works in your body. Insulin is secreted by a primary organ in your body known as the pancreas. When you eat food, carbohydrates enter into the body's blood stream. The pancreas then releases insulin in response to the detected level of glucose, or sugar in the blood.

Eating too much sugar and starch will cause extra insulin to be released very quickly. The extra insulin reduces the blood sugar levels very fast, and this is what makes you start feeling hungry again. The most common response is to actually have sugar cravings, because there is excess insulin in your system and it needs sugar to work on.

This process creates a high and low swing cycle with sugar levels in your body. You eat large amounts of sugar, which spikes your blood sugar, so your body takes immediate action to neutralize and utilize that sugar. This serves to drop your blood sugar levels rapidly.

When your blood sugar is low, the body screams at you that it needs food, and naturally the quickest way to raise your blood sugar is to eat more sugar. By doing this for many years, unfortunately, you can actually wear out your pancreas, and this causes it to stop producing insulin completely, or be unable to produce enough. This is when full fledged diabetes occurs.

There are, surprisingly, several herbal remedies that can help to relieve the pain of fibroids.

There are, surprisingly, several herbal remedies that can help to relieve the pain of fibroids. In addition, some professional herbalist say that certain herbs can even dissolve fibroids, because they are rich in a variety of phytonutrients.

Some herbalist recommend using herbal remedies that help to improve the strength of the liver, which helps to metabolize estrogen, resulting in a reduction of the size of the fibroids. Milk thistle seed, which has recently been found to
be an excellent remedy for liver problems, is one such herb. Try grinding about two tablespoons per day of fresh milk thistle (the whole herb), and using it to garnish your salads, cereals, and other dishes.

Yellow dock is another herb recommended for treating fibroids. It's a well known detoxifying herb, that can support healthy liver function by stimulating the flow of bile. It has also been reported by some people to have a mild laxative affect.

Marjoram, which is well known as a herbal sedative, can help to relieve the painful uterine cramps that accompany fibroids. Marjoram is also an effective muscle relaxant, that can be applied as a massage oil to the abdominal area. It can also provide relief from constipation.

Peppermint, better known as a great tasting candy flavor, is also an effective herbal remedy for treating headaches.

Peppermint, better known as a great tasting candy flavor, is also an effective herbal remedy for treating headaches. People have used peppermint for hundreds of years. You can take it as a supplement, or you might consider using it as an essential oil. Ask your spouse to massage your shoulders and the back of your neck, as well as pressing gently on the base of your skull.

Before using this or any other herbal remedy, you should consult with a professional herbalist to ensure you’re receiving the proper dosage in a form that works best for you. Also, keep in mind that you should check with your doctor before starting any herbal therapy program – even one that’s being directed by a professional herbalist.

Don’t overlook the healing powers of a massage, even without the presence of any essential oils. If you don’t have anyone around to massage your shoulders and neck, you can take matters into your own hands – literally. Place your hand on your scalp and rotate your fingers. You’ll discover an eventual easing of the pain.

Some individuals also claim they get relief from headache pain by applying pressure to the webbed part of their hand, the area between your thumb and forefinger. Many say they find almost instant relief when they gently press this area.

When looking for areas to massage, you may be surprised to learn that a foot massage can provide relief from your headache pain. If you’re interested in this, there are many great books on the market, as well as several internet sites that can help you.

Try heat . . . or cold! That’s right! It’s your choice. Many individuals swear that a warm towel around their neck provides the relaxation and relief from the pain. Others prefer to wrap ice in a towel and place it around their neck.

Several herbs are rich in minerals, vitamins and essential nutrients that can be taken as daily nutritional supplements. It is important to note, however, that when you buy them, make sure that you are buying the real herb, and not a hard tablet containing very little of the herb.

The best herbal nutritional supplements contain the shredded or ground herb, and are found in gel capsules. You can actually open the capsule and make ointments or salves using the ground herb inside.

Kelp is one herb that makes an excellent daily supplement, and is particularly effective for females to use during their menstrual periods. Kelp is rich in potassium, iodine, and iron, which are important during menstruation. It also contains several other essential minerals and vitamins, including magnesium, calcium, and B-complex vitamins.

Because it is a natural source of iodine, Kelp can help to regulate the thyroid gland, resulting in an improved metabolism and increased energy. It is also fairly high in salt, however, so you may want to adjust your dosage, depending on your body's sensitivity to salt.

Chlorophyll, which is considered the "life blood" of plants, contains a vast array of essential nutrients that are quickly and easily assimilated by the body. It can help to regulate the blood sugar levels in your body, and it also regulates the calcium in your blood. Chlorophyll accelerates cell and tissue regrowth and inhibits the growth of bacteria, allowing your body to heal faster.

Chlorophyll eliminates the mucus in your bowel and helps to restore damaged bowel tissue. It also purifies the liver and helps to stimulate bile movement. On top of all of this, Chlorophyll reduces bad breath and body odor as well.

You can purchase Chlorophyll in pill form, or as a tea or liquid extract. Parsley and Alfalfa are two herbs that are high in Chlorophyll.

With the growing concern about the potential side effects of prescription, and even over the counter pain killers, herbal remedies for arthritis are becoming increasingly popular.

With the growing concern about the potential side effects of prescription, and even over the counter pain killers, herbal remedies for arthritis are becoming increasingly popular.

Many of the herbal arthritis remedies are available as extracts, in tablet or capsule form. Certain herbs are most effective while they are still fresh. Before you decide on a herbal remedy, you should consult with a professional herbalist, and check with your doctor to make sure it doesn't conflict with any prescription medications you are taking.

White Willow is the herb of choice for most herbalists to provide pain relief from arthritis. It has both pain relieving and anti-inflammatory qualities, and no known negative side effects. White Willow is slower acting than prescription and over the counter pain relievers, but it's effects generally last longer.

Like White Willow, Boswellia also has anti-inflammatory qualities, and is an effective herbal remedy for arthritis. Unlike many pain relief medications, Boswellia does not cause ulceration or stomach irritation.

Cayenne is a herb more often associated with cooking than healing, but is also an effective, natural pain reliever. Cayenne's active ingredient, Capsaicin, is the source of the burning sensation people feel in topical Cayenne Creams.

Ginger and Devil's Claw are two more herbal remedies that possess anti-inflammatory qualities. In addition, Devil's Claw also works as an effective natural pain reliever.

Herbal salves and ointments are often referred to as poultices, the main difference being that poultices are used mainly for treating more severe injuries or problems.

An effective multi-purpose herbal poultice or salve to use for treating scrapes, abrasions, cuts, wounds, swelling, and to provide pain relief for infected sores, broken bones and sprains, is a mixture of comfrey, goldenseal, slippery elm and aloe vera.

Another herbal salve that helps to heal broken bones faster, and can also be used to treat ligament, joint, or gout problems: white oak bark, comfrey, black walnut, mullein, queen of the meadow, marshmallow, lobelia, wormwood, scullcap. Mix these herbs with petroleum jelly, mineral water or aloe vera gel, before applying them.

A herbal salve or poultice will often be effective as long as you use at least one of the key ingredients. For example, goldenseal is used mainly to treat infections, comfrey works to relieve pain, repair cell and skin damage, and to reduce swelling, while aloe vera helps the herbs to penetrate the multiple skin layers. Aloe vera has healing and pain relieving capabilities as well.

Onion, on its own, can be used as an effective poultice for swelling, soreness and bruises.
