Foods That Relieve Constipation

Constipation is often the result of an improper diet and individuals not drinking as much water as they need to. If you suffer from chronic constipation, then you need to educate yourself about the foods that can provide effective relief from constipation. To begin, you need to start making major changes to your diet.

Remove (or at least reduce) the amount of foods you eat that are low in nutrition, like dairy products, candy, greasy cheese burgers, etc. Unhealthy eating habits are the major cause of constipation. Wheat, bran, fruits, psyllium husks, whole grains and vegetables are foods that are rich in high quality fiber, and will help to relieve chronic constipation. These foods are also considered to be bulk forming agents that help to cleanse the colon.

These foods help to speed up the forming of fecal bulks, which are considered to be an important part of the elimination process. Fiber rich foods also help to reduce the body's cholesterol levels. Because they are not easily digestible by the intestinal tract, they are considered to be bulk forming enhancers that enable feces to pass easily and efficiently.

Examples of foods that are rich in fiber include: green beans, blackberries, broccoli, strawberries, raspberries, apples (skin included), turnip greens, whole wheat, rye, peanuts and walnuts. It is essential that you make these foods part of your daily diet.

You should also start paying attention to the nutritional information provided on food packages to determine the amount of fiber you are consuming. Your daily fiber intake should not be less than 25 grams for adults.
