Herbal Cold Sore Remedies

Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus, are considered quite contagious, and generally last around 7 to 10 days. They start as a tingling sensation along the outside of the lip and turn into raised, red, fluid filled blisters within a couple of days. A cold sore can also (on rare occasions) form on the inside of your mouth, on your chin, or on your nose.

There are Type 1 and type 2 herpes simplex viruses. The Type 1 virus causes cold sores, while the Type 2 virus is the genital version. Both types can cause sores on the facial area and on the genitals. Once you've had a cold sore, the virus remains in your skin and can cause periodic outbreaks. Outbreaks can sometimes be triggered by stress or menstruation.

Unless your immune system is weakened, most cold sores will clear up on their own. The herbal approach to treating cold sores involves disinfecting the cold sores, as well as building up the immune system to fight off the virus.

The herbal remedy most recommended for treating cold sores is Black Walnut. Black Walnut is naturally rich in iodine, making it a natural antiseptic. It can be applied externally and taken internally for treating cold sores. Apply Black Walnut extract directly on the cold sore several times a day, while taking the dried herb internally.

Another excellent herbal remedy for treating cold sores is Aloe Vera gel. It can also be applied externally several times a day, and Aloe Vera juice can be taken internally.

Comfrey salve is a cell proliferant that also works as an external application for healing cold sores.
