Making Your Own Herbal Remedies

Making your own herbal remedies is something most people can do easily. You don't necessarily have to start by growing your own herbs either, but it's not difficult to do. Many home made herbal remedies are created by buying dried herbs in bulk, or buying herbal gelcaps and opening them up to mix the powdered herb with other ingredients.

If you want to grow your own herbs, this is an excellent way to make sure there are no harmful pesticides or other toxins used during their growth or preparation. Starting your own herbs from scratch will take some time, of course, so you won't be able to make remedies immediately.

If you decide to grow your own herbs for making remedies, follow the growing instructions for the given herbs and plants you've chosen to cultivate. I'd strongly suggest using only organic compost for fertilizer, and using organic pest and weed control methods as well.

Before using your home grown herbs to create remedies, it's important you research which herbs must be dried before used, and which can be used fresh. Some herbs can also only be used in part too.

In other words: Only the root will be used, or only the leaves will be used. Though rare, there are some herbs which can make you sick if used before they're dried, so this is important to know when selecting which herbs you'll grow.

Drying your herbs can be done in a few different ways, but the most common is to put them into a brown paper bag and hang them upside down in a cool, dark, dry area of your home such as the kitchen pantry or cellar if you have one.
