Instead they repeat all the same bad habits that got them sick in the first place. If the sick person is cured and learns how to stay that way, then alternative medicine works. Another factor in healing is your personal beliefs. If you believe in a modality, then it will work for you. If you don't believe in a modality, then it won't work for you. This may sound strange but its true. Many people believe in modern medicine, so most of the time it works. But it's not a cure, only a patch because it doesn't address the cause of the problem, which holistic medicine does.

Being a doctor and using "Modern Medicine" as you call it (some would call it "Western Medicine" or "Allopathic Medicine") I'm afraid my opinions may well be interpreted as a little skewed.

Western Medicine is the mainstream of medicine (health care) as is taught and in practice in most developed countries. It has a long history, although perhaps not as long as the histories of some of the traditional forms of medicine.

While it remains somewhat outside the realm of hard science, it has drawn heavily from scientific thought and adopted the scientific process wherever it can possibly be implemented. It has applied science as best it can to the grassroots origins of herbalism, the greek theory of humours, and other premodern beliefs such as "spontaneous generation". These have investigated and the useful areas adopted, the useless ones dropped. New theories have been formulated as more and more truth information has come to light.

The major strength of modern medicine lies in its application of science. It has the capacity to grow and adapt – adopting interventions and ideas from other areas of health care as evidence comes to light showing that they are effective (eg. Acupuncture and hypnotherapy – previously in disrepute – have been found to have applications in medicine and are now adopted).

Other areas are currently being evaluated – nutritional medicine, prolotherapy – areas such as these have advocates in medicine as well as detractors. They are not yet considered mainstream.
