herbal supplements?

Other than vitamins/folic acid, are there any herbal supplements any of you ladies have tried to promote conception/ovulation etc?

admin answers:

There are lots which can help but perhaps the two most useful are False Unicorn Root and Vitex Agnus Castus. Both of these herbs are excellent promoters of fertility and have been used for hundreds of years to aid conception.

False Unicorn Root is an excellent all-round aid for the female reproductive system and normalises the menstrual cycle, whilst promoting regular and frequent ovulation and improving the condition of the womb – thus aiding conception. It also helps to maintain healthy ovaries and balance hormones.

Vitex Agnus Castus (also called agnus castus, vitex or chasteberry) helps to strengthen the all the female reproductive organs whilst also balancing and maintaining correct hormone levels throughout the whole body. It also helps with ovulation and in general helps promote ideal conditons for conception within the body.

You can choose to take either both of these herbs at the same time or just try one. They are available in capsule or tincture form from you local health food store. All instructions for dosage will be clearly marked on the bottle.

I can also reccommend you drink either nettle or raspberry leaf tea on a daily basis.

Once you become pregnant, it is best that you stop taking these supplements. If you wish to continue herbal medicine during pregnancy it is reccommended that you visit a professional herbalist as he will be able to assess which herbs will suit you specifically.

However there are some herbs which are perfectly suitable for anyone to take during pregnancy, details of which can be found at:

Good luck and I hope this has been of some help x

Maria asks…

What herbal supplements would be helpful with post-pill amenorrhea?

It has been 6 months since I stopped using oral contraception. I have yet to get a period. What herbal supplements could help with this?

admin answers:

Agnus castus, also known as vitex or chaste berry. This should help to regulate your hormonal cycle because it works at the level of the pituitary gland. Tincture may work better than capsules. You will need to take it for at least 3 months perhaps to have some real effect. You might like to do some research on Agnus castus.

Best wishes.

Daniel asks…

How can one know which brand of herbal supplements is best and most credible?

I spend alot of money buying alot of herbal and nutritional supplements, but lately I've been wondering how one can know which supplements truly contain the ingredients that they claim in the amounts that they claim, and whether they are manufactured with quality standards, etc. Since they aren't regulated, how can one know for sure. Are there any brands that are frequently tested by independent labs, and how does one know that the supplement company is not just paying off the lab to give it a passing score? I'm obsessing over this but don't know how to find credible information about it. Can anyone help? Thank you.

admin answers:

Good question, because these products are essentially unregulated.

Sometimes they are contaminated. Here's a list of supplement warnings and recalls from the FDA:

This site claims to review supplements, but you need to suscribe. The NIH has a review of the site, but doesn't mention the accuracy of the testing.

Consumer Reports sometimes evaluates supplements, but I think this site also requires a subscription:

I'd be interested to know about other third-party testing.
